[bout to go to queer prom :)]
a co-worker of mine questioned another co-worker of mine why he watched glee and he responded simply that he enjoyed it. the interrogator proceeded to tell the boy who enjoyed glee about the one time that he watched part of an episode, and saw two male characters kissing. naturally he couldnt continue to watch the show because it disturbed him.
there are a couple of problems i have with this exchange. since i have personally seen every episode of glee i know for a fact that the kiss he saw was rather rare for the show. although the show often conveys a pro-lgbt message, it is in no way gratuitous with homosexual love scenes, and when there are such scenes they are always tasteful.
the second problem i have with what was said is how it alludes to a disturbing social double standard our society still has. if a lesbian couple had been kissing in the episode he watched, it would be safe to say that he would not have been disturbed. because we live in a very hetero-male driven world, two men showing affection is revolting, but if two women show affection it becomes a turn on. this is both degrading to the men and women. the gay men are seen as not worthy of being men, while the women are objectified to pleasure the heterosexual man.
i often allow myself to believe that equality has already come, but then i am forced to recall that we are in a constant struggle.
